My name is Kristopher Magnusson. As you might guess from my LiveJournal name, I am a dedicated advocate for space exploration.
I live and work in the Wine Country. Living here is a major life choice for me. My wife is originally from Sonoma County, I have lived here for two years now, and I feel very lucky to live in such a beautiful place. I spend a fair amount of time on my motorcycle, touring the back roads of Sonoma, Napa, and Marin. I will share some of what I have found in images posted in my journal.
I like to pontificate about what might have been if advanced projects such as Project Orion, the NERVA Saturn V third stage, and the Nova booster had been built. Currently I am writing a novel about a future U.S. Space Force that uses nuclear pulse propulsion ships to defend Earth's military assets throughout the solar system. The main character is a space ship captain who has bipolar mood and borderline personality disorders, and the tone of the novel is a cross between that of the film Dr. Strangelove and The Forever War. It's my first novel and I'm obsessed with getting it right the first time, so I'm rewriting it over and over.
The reason the main character of my novel has two mental illnesses is because I have them also, and I am using my own experience as a bipolar borderline to inject some unpredictability into the main character. I'm also using these illnesses to demonstrate that there is an element of craziness in a man who agrees to spend years of his life locked up in a nuclear-powered tin can for the sake of ardent nationalism. (In case you're wondering, my illnesses have recently become manageable using psych medications and regular therapy.)
